Fire at senior housing complex displaces residents

ANKENY, Iowa (June 16, 2012) - The Ankeny fire department was dispatched on Friday, June 15, 2012 at 5:45 p.m., to a fire at a senior housing complex located at 1125 W 1st Street, unit 102 in Ankeny. Firefighters arriving on scene discovered flames showing from the patio side of the unit and extending to the second floor apartment as well as the roof. Mutual aid was immediately requested from neighboring fire departments including: Polk City, Altoona, Elkhart, Johnston and an ambulance from Mercy Hospital. Ankeny police provided scene control and assistance with residents of the complex. The fire was declared under control in less than 30 minutes.
Two units suffered significant damage, as well as the attic and roof area directly above the area.
One victim was treated for cuts and abrasions and declined transport to the hospital. There were no other injuries.
The Central Iowa Chapter of the American Red Cross provided assistance with temporary housing, clothing and other needs.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation..
