Fire SuppressionAbout the Fire Suppression Division

The Ankeny Fire Department Fire Suppression Division is responsible for the preservation of life and property in the Ankeny fire district. The Fire Suppression Division responded to over 700 calls for service in 2011. Currently, the Fire Division is an ISO class 4 department.

There are 70 members of the department trained at or above a Firefighter I Certification Level. There are several within this group who hold higher certification levels ranging from Firefighter II, Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor II, Driver/Operator, Pumper and Aerial. This 70 member division has 21 full time positions. The remaining personnel of the division are made up of part-time/paid per call personnel.

The Fire Suppression Division is broken down into two battalions. Battalion 1 is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Battalion 2 is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday and around the clock on Saturday and Sunday. Each battalion is further divided into 3 companies which operate multiple vehicles.

Both battalions and all companies operate out of two strategically located fire stations within the city limits of Ankeny. Currently, the suppression district for the Ankeny Fire Department is approximately 55 square miles.
